The chemistry of the eleven vertex nido -tricarbollides, in contrast to that of the dicarbollides is very small. It was as late as in 1995 when the first representatives of this family were reported by the collaborative work of this and the Czech group. There are two synthetic routes leading to tricarbollide compounds: cyanide and isonitrile methods giving respectively: [7-NH2-7,8,9-C3B8H10] and [7-tBuNH-7,8,9-C3B8H10].

However in contrast to the smooth complexation C2B3 open face in the dicarbollide series, the tricarbollide C3B2 face can  only be complexed by forcing conditions. This phenomenon is in all cases associated with an extensive rearrangement of the three cluster carbons over the cluster area to form tricarbollide complexes of extreme stability in air.
