Amanda Muñoz, master’s students at the N&N group, is participating on the nanoGUNE Winter School, which is held in the nanoGUNE facilities in San Sebastian (Spain). The School includes a combination of academic lectures, soft skills training sessions and hands-on lab practices. Amanda is learning about very diverse topics such us electrospinning, protein nanoparticles and photonics. We hope you enjoy the training and come back with fresh ideas!
Miquel Torras received an Extraordinary Master Prize from the University of Barcelona for his excellent marks during his MSc in Applied Materials Chemistry in this university (2016-2017). The ceremony took place last Tuesday, January 29, presided by the rector, Joan Elias. The University of Barcelona awarded, in the same ceremony, the honorary doctorate to two distinguished figures of European law: Luigi Ferrajoli, author of the relation between democracy and law, and Luciano Vandelli, first authority on administrative law and territorial organization.
“Martí Gich rep 2 M€ per investigar el 5G” is an article written by Núria Jar that was published on “El Diari de Sabadell“. It describes the project of the N&N researcher Martí Gich that has been awarded with an ERC of 2M euros!
We are very excited to announce that the N&N researcher Martí Gich, has been awarded with a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant (CoG) for his project entitled “Ferrites-by-design for Millimeter-wave and Terahertz Technologies”(FeMiT). Martí Gich will carry out his project in the period 2019-2024 with a total of nearly 2 M€ to cover the project costs.
All the N&N members are very enthusiastic about the project and wish Marti a lot of success, congratulations!
From the 20th to the 22nd of November 2018 the PhD fellow Irene Anton attended to the NanoBio&Med conference organized at the Parc Científic of de Barcelona. This multidisciplinary congress was very useful to catch up with the recent advances in the rapidly evolving field of nanobiotechnology. Irene got the opportunity to present her results regarding bacterial nanocellulose interactions with human cells with both a poster and a talk. Her poster entitled “Bacterial nanocellulose and bacterial nanocellulose nanocomposites as substrates for cell culture” was selected for the best poster award sponsored by the journal Biomolecules MDPI.
From the 8th to the 12th of October 2018 Sole Roig, PhD candidate at the N&N group, participated in the 2nd Conference in Polymer Science (POLYMAR) dedicated to biopolymers and taking place in a cruise through the Aegean sea. Her presentation “Microstructuration and functionalization of bacterial cellulose” was awarded with the Best Oral Presentation by an early stage researcher price sponsored by Publishing MDPI, congratulations Sole!
“POLYMAR2018 was a very interesting congress with a new format I have never seen before. The industrial point of view of most of the talks offered me the possibility to learn new approaches that we can apply on our lab in order to make easier the commercialization of the materials we are investigating.”
On 10th Otober 2018 Anna Roig attended the 2018 Albus Scientific Awards Ceremony at Grifols headquarters in Sant Cugat. As one of the two awardees of the 2017 edition, she presented the results on the Albumin-iron oxide nanocages project.Carlos Moya is the post-doc working in this project. This year’s award recipients are:
Paolo Caraceni, MD, Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna Bologna, Italy Project: Long‐term albumin administration in patients with decompensated cirrhosis: clinical and pathophysiological implications
Hanadi Sleiman, PhD, Department of Chemistry, McGill University, Montreal, Canada Project: Albumin as a passive targeting agent: effect of the protein binding on stability, bio distribution and therapeutic outcome of oligonucleotides and DNA nanoparticles
Jan Grzelak attended the award ceremony from La Caixa Fellows in Caixa Forum (Barcelona) and received a diploma for his excellence fellowship supported by La Caixa to perform his PhD at the N&N group on the topic “Mesoporous magnetic nanorods for theranostics”. Two other ICMAB researchers have also been granted with by a PhD grant from La Caixa and also assisted the ceremony.
The MAGBBRIS Consortium, where Yajie Zhang and Anna Roig participate, celebrated its kickoff meeting during the 26th and 27th of March 2018. The project coordinator, Anna Rosell, welcomed the participants at the Vall d’Hebron Research institute (VHIR), in Barcelona.
During the meetings the participants had the opportunity to understand better the EuroNanoMed Joint Call thanks to Janna Slabbekoorn from the Competitive Calls Unit from VHIR. Afterwards they heard a little bit about each partner’s background related to the project. the members of the consortium could also learn about the past work using endothelial progenitor cells for the treatment of stroke, nanocapsule synthesis, pre-clinical and clinical magnetic resonance imaging, different in vitro models of the blood-brain barrier, manufacturing of high volumes of proteins under GMP conditions and magnetic targeting of nanomaterials.
