MAGBBRIS project kicks off

The MAGBBRIS Consortium, where Yajie Zhang and Anna Roig participate, celebrated its kickoff meeting during the 26th and 27th of March 2018. The project coordinator, Anna Rosell, welcomed the participants at the Vall d’Hebron Research institute (VHIR), in Barcelona.

During the meetings the participants had the opportunity to understand better the EuroNanoMed Joint Call thanks to Janna Slabbekoorn from the Competitive Calls Unit from VHIR. Afterwards they heard a little bit about each partner’s background related to the project. the members of the consortium could also learn about the past work using endothelial progenitor cells for the treatment of stroke, nanocapsule synthesis, pre-clinical and clinical magnetic resonance imaging, different in vitro models of the blood-brain barrier, manufacturing of high volumes of proteins under GMP conditions and magnetic targeting of nanomaterials.

We wish a lot of success to the MAGBBRIS project!

LLAVOR Project was awarded to the Group NN

PLANT HEALING, a project lead by Dr. Anna Laromaine from the Group Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites at the Institut of Materials Science in Barcelona (ICMAB) and in collaboration with the Group of Bacterial pathogens and plant cell death from the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG), was awarded by Els Fons Europeus de Desenvolupament Regional i el Departament d’Empresa i Coneixement de la Generalitat de Catalunya with a grant of 20.000€. The PLANT HEALING 2016 LLAVOR 00052 project will work to offer a novel material that could be implemented in current grafting protocols with no extra time or effort to significantly improve graft efficiency. PLANT HEALING will make an agricultural breakthrough, by developing a new nanocomposite material containing silver nanoparticles linked to bacterial nanocellulose.

High participation of the N&N group at the 3rd Scientific Meeting of PhD Students

November 7th and 8th:
ICMAB hosted the third edition of the Meeting of PhD students from the Barcelona Nanotechnology Cluster – Bellaterra (ICMAB, ICN2, IMB-CNM, UAB, ALBA). This event is intended at  promoting the networking between them in an academic and scientific environment. The PhD students from the N&N group participated largely with posters and oral contributions:

Miquel Torras: Fast and simple microwave synthesis of functional multimaterial goldnanoparticles
Sole Roig: Engineering bacterial cellulose during the biosynthesis
Yajie Zhang: Multifunctional Platform of Nanocapsules as Drug Carrier for Angiogenic Therapies

Oral presentations:
Zhongrui Luo: Evaluation of the nano-bio interactions between Au-NPs and Caenorhabditis elegans
Zheng Ma: Understanding ferroelectricity in epsilon-Fe2O3 films
Irene Anton: Functionalized bacterial nanocellulose for epithelial regeneration

And… Irene was awarded with the second award for the best oral presentation!

Anna Roig receives the Albus Award for her project on “Albumin iron-oxide nanocages”

On Tuesday 3rd October, Anna Roig received the Albus Award 2017, by Grifols, to develop a project on “Albumin iron-oxide nanocages”. The Awards Ceremony took place at the Grifols Museum, which is located in the same building where the Grifols company started their activities, in 1940. Every year, the Albus Program gives two Albus Awards of 50,000 € to the best two innovative ideas related to albumin and its role as a therapeutic product. The project proposals are assessed by independent reviewers. In this year’s edition, the two award recipients were Anna Roig and Dr. Karl Oettl, from the Medical University of Graz (Austria).
Good job Anna! We wish you good luck with this new project!

Jordi Floriach-Clark awarded excellent with distinction for his Bachelor’s thesis

Congratulations to the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology student Jordi Floriach-Clark and his supervisor Dr. Anna Laromaine Sagué for the excellent Treball de Final de Grau (Bachelor Degree Thesis). The work was on the use of bacterial cellulose for treatments in plants: “Bacterial Cellulose and its Nanocomposites for Applications in Regeneration and Infection Control in Plants.” and was awarded with excellent and distinction by the jury.

Good job Jordi and Anna!

Irene Anton was at the 31st Conference of the European Colloid and Interface Society

From the 3rd to the 8th of September of 2017 Irene Anton, a Ph.D. student from the N&N group, attended a big meeting of Colloids and Interfaces in Madrid (ECIS2017). The event was hosted by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Irene participated with two posters and was awarded with one of the two prizes sponsored by the journal Polymers.

  • Testing nanocellulose as biomaterial for epithelial regeneration

  • Encapsulating endothelial progenitor cells’ secretome into magnetic nanocapsules for targeted angiogenic therapies

Jan defended his Master Thesis in Poland

Jan Grzelak defended his Master thesis at the University of Warsaw on the 27th of July 2017. His supervisors Anna Laromaine and Martí Gich came to Poland for the defence.
Jan was enrolled in a Master’s in Nanostructure Engineering and the title of the thesis was ‘Synthesis of supports for catalysis with palladium nanoparticles templated by bacterial cellulose’.
He got the highest mark (excellent) for the defence and the final mark from the whole studies was 4.88/5. He will receive a diploma with distinction! Next academic year Jan will be back to the N&N group to do his PhD with a grant from La Caixa

Congratulations Jan!

Anna Roig gets an Albus Grifols Scientific Award!

Good news!

Anna Roig has been awarded with the Albus Award 2017, one of the Scientific Awards offered by Grifols, the pharmaceutical and chemical multinational company. The Award consists of 50,000 € to carry out the project “Albumin-iron oxide nanocages”

The Albus Program is an annual international award focused on innovative ideas related to albumin and its role as a therapeutic product. The Program offers two awards of 50,000 € each year. The proposals are assessed by an independent review committee formed by world-wide recognized experts

Anna’s “Albumin-iron oxide nanocages” project gets inspiration from the apoferritin nanoconstructs. It aims at investigating if albumin nanocages, consisting of a few units of albumin self-assembled and self-standing, can be formed by using inorganic iron oxide nanoparticles as semi-sacrificial templates. The albumin nanocages could then find application as a nanomedicinal product for imaging and drug delivery.

The winners will be given their Awards at a Ceremony that will take place on October 3rd, 2017 in Barcelona.
