I received the B.S in Physics (1989) and PhD in Physics (1994) from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. After pre- and postdoctoral positions (46 months) at Royal Institute of Technology of Stockholm (Sweden), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), Univesität Regensburg (Germany) and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), I became tenured scientist at Barcelona Materials Science Institute (ICMAB-CSIC) in 2000, and in 2010 I was appointed Full Professor.
Since 2008 I am Head of the Superconducting Materials and large scale nanostructures Department of ICMAB. My scientific interest includes functional oxides and superconducting materials, understanding of growth and physical mechanisms, and materials integration in devices, which have given me breakthrough achievements published in high impact journals (Nat Phys, Nat Mat, Nat. Comm., Sci Rep, Sci Rep., PRL, Chem Mat, Adv. Mat, JACS, Adv. Funct. Mat., Chem Comm, Small, Chem. Mat., APL, Nanoscale, PRB, SUST) and 12 patents (6 licensed). In particular, I have been involved physical understanding of superconducting materials, in melt textured ceramics, epitaxial films growth by chemical solution deposition (CSD) and nanocomposites, physical mechanisms and correlation with the microstructure, vortex matter, coated conductors, superconducting materials integration in device, growth and nanoscale characterization of self-assembled and templated oxide nanomaterials (nanoparticles, nanowires, nanoislands, ultrathin films), Resistive Switching phenomena in strongly correlated oxides.
I have been Editorial Executive / Advisory Board member of Superconducting Science and Technology (IOP- SUST) sine 2005. I am Board member of European Society for Applied Superconductivity (ESAS) since 2007 and Associated Editor of the Superconducting News Forum since 2013. I am co-founder of the spin-off company OXOLUTIA created from my ICMAB group in 2010. I have been principle investigator of more than 10 national (including 4 materials PN and 3 industrial) and 5 EU projects, 1 CERN project and I have been group leader of a CONSOLIDER project. I was awarded in 2015 with a H2020 ERC- Advanced Grant to boost superconducting nanocomposite coated conductors towards ultrafast growth and ultrahigh magnetic field properties. I am presently guarantee, executive board member and research line leader of the Severo Ochoa excellence award of ICMAB (2016-2019).
I have given 2 plenary and over 27 invited talks at international conferences. I have co-organized over 8 international conferences including two MRS-spring symposiums. I have been editor of several journals special issues. I am evaluator of EU, national and international projects. I have been evaluator committee member of the Applied Physics Department of Univ. Twente and I have been managing committee delegate in two COST actions. I have received several awards in the area of applied superconductivity (Duran Farrell award for Technology Research in superconducting fault current limiters, 2002; Novare-Endesa for R+D+i in Energy with the superconducting cable, 2007; and ITEK Award for Ink Jet Printing for functional ceramic coatings, 2012; and the “Barcelona City prize to Experimental science and technology 2015”. I want to emphasize my effort in reaching and keeping an interdisciplinary group, with critical mass, devoted to the understanding of superconducting materials and applications, that nowadays is an international reference.
